Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City look to mount pressure on table-toppers Liverpool with a victory when they face a struggling Newcastle United side in the latter's backyard.

Newcastle brushed aside Sunderland in the FA Cup 3rd Round to claim an easy win for the Magpies but Eddie Howe's side have a lot to ponder upon considering their performance in the Premier League. The Magpies are on a wretched streak of three consecutive defeats and with multiple injuries to key names derailing their campaign, the clash against the champions could see them drop more points.

City's fallen season has suddenly found wings with Pep Guardiola's men inching closer to regaining their position at the pinnacle of the English summit. Once winless in four straight Premier League games, City have rekindled their form winning three and drawing one in their last four. With a game in hand over the two teams above them, Manchester City will be determined to grab three points and gallop towards the summit.

Erling Haaland has been ruled out of Manchester City’s Premier League game at Newcastle on Saturday because of a foot injury that has kept him sidelined since early December.

The Norway striker has missed the past eight games in all competitions though he’s still the co-leading scorer in the league with 14 goals.

Haaland hasn’t played since a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Dec. 6. City manager Pep Guardiola had described the injury as a bone stress reaction and said the timeline for a return was week by week.

On Friday, Guardiola didn’t offer any update after confirming that Haaland and defender John Stones (ankle) won’t suit up against Newcastle.

Erling is out and John is out, the manager said.

The 23-year-old Haaland, who has returned to training, has also scored five goals in Champions League play this campaign.

Playmaking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is set for more minutes Saturday, possibly as a starter for the defending champions as they look to pull within two points of league leader Liverpool.

The Belgium international returned from a hamstring injury Sunday as a second-half substitute in City’s 5-0 win over Huddersfield in the FA Cup. Right on cue, De Bruyne provided an assist on Jeremy Doku’s goal.

Eddie Howe's roster has been plagued with injuries this season and fatigue has played a crucial role in their shambolic run in England of late.

Callum Wilson and Matt Targett are nursing hamstring problems while the duo of Nick Pope and Jacob Murphy have shoulder injuries. Harvey Barnes (foot), Elliot Anderson (back), Sandro Tonali (suspended) and Javi Manquillo (groin) are all ruled out of the clash against the champions.

Joe Willock became the latest addition to the list with the midfielder picking up an Achilles injury while Joelinton is also confined to the treatment room due to a thigh problem he sustained during his side's FA Cup victory against Sunderland.

The biggest boost for Pep Guardiola was the return of Kevin De Bruyne with the Belgian dishing an assist in his first appearance after his injury. The veteran midfielder could still be restricted to a bench appearance as Guardiola hopes to keep him available for the bigger clashes. De Bruyne's counterpart Jeremy Doku also announced his return with a feisty strike to find the back of the net but the winger could be deputised as a substitute only.

Spanish midfielder Rodri is scheduled to return to the winger's engine room with Bernardo Silva replacing Oscar Bobb on the flank while Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson will feature between the sticks displacing Stefan Ortega.

Guardiola's injury catalogue contains of Norwegian goal-machine Erling Haaland who's on the road to recovery from his foot issue, Manuel Akanji who has a knee problem, and the duo of Bernardo Silva and Kalvin Phillips who are suffering from illness. John Stones is the solitary player ruled completely out of the matchday squad owing to an ankle injury.

One of the top English Premier League clubs looks to get back on the horse after a brief pause, as Manchester City pays a visit to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Manchester City is once again right in the thick of the championship race. The three-time EPL champs might not be sitting in first as the second half of the season begins, but they are lying in the weeds like last season, waiting to jump on the top clubs if they falter. They went into the break going unbeaten in their last four league matches, swamping Huddersfield in the third round of the FA Cup last Sunday.

City comes into Saturday third in the table, five points back of league-leading Liverpool.

On the opposite, Newcastle has taken one heck of a dip after an incredible 2022-23 campaign. With elevated expectations, the Magpies have faltered. While they easily beat Sunderland in FA Cup play, Newcastle had dropped five of their last six EPL contests, falling to the likes of Everton, Luton Town and Nottingham Forest, culminating with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on New Year’s Day. Pair up with an embarrassing showing in the UEFA Champions League, optimism is at a low not seen in a couple of years.

Newcastle are one of the most out-of-form teams in the EPL right now. Only Brentford holds a worse record over the past six games, and during that spell, the Magpies have claimed just a single win while suffering defeat five times. At least victory over their bitter local rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup injected some fresh optimism. Still, Man City's visit is not well timed for Eddie Howe’s side who desperately need a win to avoid slipping even further down the table.

The talk of Man City’s downfall was a little premature. After a rare dry spell that saw the reigning champions go four league games within a win in early December, the world-class side are once again heading in the right direction. Man City are now four games undefeated, and key players like Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Halaand are returning after periods on the sideline with injury. Although both players may not quite be ready in time to start this match.

Man City have a remarkably dominant record against Newcastle. City have lost exactly once to Newcastle in the Premier League since 2005, and even draws between the two sides are pretty infrequent. It’s hard to see this match being anything but a very comfortable Man City win and another loss for an already battered and bruised Newcastle side.
